ARTILLERIET <3 BIRGITTA WATZ

Artist Birgitta Watz has expressed herself through many different materials over the years: glass, clay, books, paintings, sculptures and textiles just to name a few. She is a curious ceramist as well as professor of art and design with the entirety of the meal in focus.

Her years of studies and training in art, culture, history and techniques all melt in to her culinary design. »Archaeologists can study the shreds of ancient pottery to determine people’s eating habits hundreds and thousands of years ago. A good hand is all you need to mould objects out of clay; a good hand and imagination.« Birgitta herself has this hand and imagination.

Her ceramics have a seemingly simple form, but in shape and glaze they communicate with ancient design traditions. »Access to clay, the usefulness of the products, their tolerance of re, their strength – all these factors which have made ceramics part of our lives since the beginning of time. ey contain ideas about the human need for origin and safety« Birgitta explains.

It is fascinating to listen to Birgitta Watz’ intellectual and sensible reasoning about human needs and behaviour, and then see it transformed into her work; a vibrant and beautiful shape.
